Chapter 7 : Return

Januhuk knew as soon as he saw the look on the healer’s face that the Frenchman was dead. The healer was a man of few words anyway so he was probably relieved. At least this was simple task for the healer, unlike the number of strange illnesses that have occurred since the white man entered the land of the Allegheny.

The more spiritual members of the tribe considered it an omen that the white man was no good. Specifically they said the white-man walked with the evil spirits and brought their poisons along with them. But Januhuk knew that illness has a way of traveling from tribe to tribe and that the white man just brought them across the great water from theirs.

The healer was not the only one relieved, Kublanerasaka obviously was thankful for a change. He never liked the ‘white toad’ and the French-men in general. But Januhuk knew that Kublanerasaka was a warrior, regardless of his father’s teachings and was wary of all outsiders.

So now Januhuk had to decide what to do with his guest and his belongings. The best plan is to take him back to the white man’s village as soon as possible. It will take several hours to get back to their village so he figured he better get a pack together.

“Kublanerasaka, pick four braves and a sister to help us take the white toad back to the French-men. Make sure this doesn’t interfere with tribe or family obligations.” He said with as much confidence as he could muster. “Can you spare Hirasota for the evening healer?”

“As long as he is back before mid-day tomorrow,” said the healer. “I need him to help me prepare for travel.”

“I see no problem with being back late this evening, healer.” Said Januhuk “See that he brings the tree cot so we can easily carry this, large package.” Hopefully we didn’t need him, but the healer’s assistant would be able to help us with any other problems concerning the French-man along the way.

Januhuk started collecting the French-man’s things and putting them into a pouch. The sooner he could get going, the better.
